Bahu Fort, Jammu – Where History Meets Devotion
Standing proudly on the banks of the Tawi River, Bahu Fort is one of the oldest and most significant landmarks of Jammu. More than just a historical structure, the fort is a powerful symbol of heritage, faith, and royal legacy, offering visitors a blend of spirituality and panoramic views of the city.
A Glimpse into History
Believed to have been originally constructed by Raja Bahulochan, the founder of Jammu, Bahu Fort dates back over 3,000 years. The present structure was later strengthened by the Dogra rulers in the 19th century. Strategically located on a hilltop, the fort once served as a key defense point overlooking the surrounding plains.
The Sacred Temple of Bawey Wali Mata
Inside the fort lies the revered Temple of Maha Kali, popularly known as Bawey Wali Mata. The temple holds immense religious significance and is considered second only to Mata Vaishno Devi in spiritual importance within the region. Devotees believe that the Goddess fulfills wishes and offers protection from evil forces.

Although the fort is not used as a military structure anymore, it has been beautifully preserved. The surrounding Bahu Garden, with its terraced lawns and fountains, offers a peaceful retreat and spectacular sunset views over Jammu city. The fort also houses a small museum showcasing Jammu’s cultural history.
